30th Color and Imaging Conference

Workshop 1: Facial Appearance, Rendering, Perception, and...

Workshop 1

Monday 14 November 2022
13:00 - 15:30 (2 hours)

Convener: Kaida Xiao, University of Leeds
Confirmed speakers*: Tushar Chauhan, MIT; Susan Farnand, Rochester Institute of Technology; Yan Lu, University of Leeds; Yoko Mizokami, Chiba University; and Norimichi Tsumura, Chiba University

Description:
Face is identity. There has recently been a resurgence in interest in facial appearance, driven by several different technologies and application areas where accurate measurement, perception, and reproduction are key factors. Application areas include color and beauty in the cosmetic industry, facial image capture and processing in the graphic arts industry, and medical diagnostics for various diseases. For such applications, a comprehensive knowledge of the range of skin tones that exist, an understanding of how skin tones vary and how people perceive these differences, and the relationship between appearance and preference in a wide range of viewing conditions are strongly desired. This workshop explores this topic.

Tushar Chauhan is a postdoctoral research associate at Bear Lab, Picower Institute of Learning and Memory at MIT. He is interested in biological sensory computation and studies how statistical regularities in our environment are related to both behaviour and measures of cortical activity. His work aims to leverage insights gained from biology to the development of human-like technologies for vision, AI, and data interpretation. A current areas of focus is the perception of natural color distributions (e.g., skin, foliage).

Susan Farnand
is graduate program director and an assistant professor in the Program of Color Science at RIT. Her research interests center around human color vision and perception, including individual color vision differences, visual attention, color imaging, image quality metrics, 3D printing, and archiving. She holds a BS in engineering from Cornell, and an MS in imaging science and PhD in color science from RIT. Farnand is the current IS&T President.

Yan Lu is a research fellow at Leeds Institute of Textile and Colour at the University of Leeds. She has a background in engineering and optics. Yan’s research interests include facial appearance measurement, facial preference modelling, and cultural difference regarding preference. She is TC member for CIE TC 1-92, Skin Colour Database.

Yoko Mizokami is a professor in the department of imaging sciences in the Graduate School of Engineering at Chiba University. She received her PhD in engineering from Ritsumeikan University in Japan and spent four years as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Psychology at University of Nevada, Reno. Mizokami is currently an associate director of CIE Division 1 and an International Colour Vision Society board member. Her research interests lie in color vision, color science, and vision in natural environments.

Norimichi Tsumura is an associate professor in the department of information and computer sciences at Chiba University and a researcher in PRESTO, Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST). He received his BE, ME, and DE in applied physics from Osaka University. He has held visiting academic positions at University of Rochester and Columbia University and is an IS&T Fellow. Tsumura is interested in the color image processing, material appearance, computer vision, computer graphics, and biomedical optics.
